The Shrine Spirits are a pair of identical spirits originating from the Shrine. After Miko Yotsuya inadvertently makes a pact with them, they protect Miko by killing spirits that are aware of her ability to see them.

Appearance[]

The Shrine Spirits are a pair of identical spirits with short hair and fox ears. Their faces consist of a vaguely feline nose, darkened, cracked slits for eyes and a grimacing, sharp-toothed mouths. They are incredibly short, reaching only up to Miko's shoulder.

Both spirits float, as their black, digitigrade legs end in a tapering, wispy point. They wear identical outfits that vaguely resemble those of shrine maidens, with bells hanging around their obi.

Their sleeves are billowing and long, obscuring their massive, five-fingered hands tipped with blackened claws and thin, bandaged arms.

Personality[]

The two of them seem to obey those who pray at the shrine, but even though they help those who request it, they desire payment for their assistance, Miko's payment is her soul.

When Miko brought them tofu as an offering, they growled and muttered in a strange language, but Miko left before they could do any real harm.

They are extremely aggressive and ruthless towards their opponents, attacking incessantly until said opponent is completely destroyed. To this extent, they are incredibly fearless, facing spirits many times their size without hesitation.

Biography[]

It is later revealed that one of the spirits is Oka Towako, a dead medium and former master of Mitsue Takaeda, who was somehow transformed by the God of the Mountain. The other spirit is presumably also a dead human, but nothing is known of their identity.

Abilities[]

Shrine Spirit attack

Shrine Spirit Blast

The Shrine Spirits using projectiles to protect Miko when she visited the Shrine for the second time.

Despite their small size, the Shrine Spirits are phenomenally powerful combatants.

They possess enough strength to dismember spirits many times their size and move fast enough to intercept targets within seconds. They are able to manifest anywhere around Miko when she's in danger. The appear to be able to sense the intentions of spirits near Miko and will only react against hostile spirits, given that the did not attack the Axeman since he did not actually want to hurt Miko unlike the Steel Drum Spirit, Balloon Child Spirit and Zen’s Mother.

Both spirits are capable of projecting an invisible blast by placing facing their palms towards an opponent. This blast has been shown to effortlessly tear massive holes through spirits. In the anime adaptation, these projectiles are portrayed to have a golden yellow color.

Despite incurring massive damage in some fights, they reappear in pristine condition the next time Miko needs them.
